Tuesday 17 December
Today was my first really rainy
day and afforded a nice chance to be lazy and catch up with some reading as
well as listening to the dire end to England’s Ashes campaign.
Outside my hotel window, the farmers were putting the finishing touches to their fields before planting the seeds. They spent a fair while levelling off to perfection - revealed by the film of water that sits over each field. Although much in Vietnam seems a bit casual, the detail consciousness of the farmers is incredible - both here on the plain and in Sapa where the terraces are engineered to perfection.

In the evening I went into
the old town and was greeted by a scene very similar to yesterday – without the flood
and possibly with fewer shrines in front of shops.. So now I’m somewhat
confused. I think the scale of yesterday means it was the actual Legendary Full
Moon. But tonight was still remarkably pretty and the old town buildings look
amazing in artificial light.
