A day at the citadel

Wednesday 11 December

I spent most of the day going round the citadel – Hue’s version of the Forbidden City, built by the Nguyen emperors who were somewhat taken by China. Unfortunately the area was badly damaged by the French - and by the Americans during the Tet offensive. There is now a good deal of restoration work, which is a bit of a misnomer as it often means a complete rebuild.

On the walk back to the hotel, I got a good view of the Perfume River and came across a strange sculpture park on the embankment.
