Hsam Rong Park - a rock forest

Friday 6 December

I felt pretty tired by the previous four days of walking and had a lazy morning writing up this record and having a walk around Sapa. Quite quickly I came to the entrance to Hsam Rong which is an extensive park in Sapa. It involves a lot of climbing along a path among what looks like volcanic rocks, affording tremendous views of Sapa and the surrounding countryside – constrained somewhat by fog whilst I was there.

The park includes a theatre where a folk tale (boys meet girls) was enacted; there was also a recital of a recorder-like instrument; finally there was dancing that involved hopping between bamboo canes that were being moved in tune to the music. At the end, I rather idiotically failed to buy the CD that was on offer. It might have made a nice memento.
