A windy beach

Monday 16 December

It was the birthday of a fellow guest and I was presented with a piece of cake with enough whipped cream on it to stop my arteries clean in their tracks I would imagine.

Not just to work it off, I took one of the hotel bikes and went down to the coast. It was very breezy with big waves and a no swimming notice, as if it was needed. Swimming was an impossibility! I managed not to get arrested looking at a chart in a building I innocently took to be a ferry office. The chart was detailed and went right down the coast to Cambodia. I was musing on its purpose when there was a loud shout and a man came and ushered me out muttering something about security.

I carried on pedaling along the coast road which is now punctuated heavily with swanky ‘resorts’. They are my idea of hell and I would be looking around for what to do after about 30 minutes but they must have their market of people who want to be bussed in from the airport for a week of gorging and swimming.

That evening I went into town and found myself in the midst of what I took to be the Legendary Full Moon Night Celebrations. Lots of the shops have small shrines placed at their entrance and by the river the streets are lit by lanterns with the street lighting turned off. People float candles in small boxes down the river and make a wish. It all creates a lovely sight and atmosphere. To add to it the river slightly flooded onto the adjoining road at high tide. The only odd thing is this celebration was written down as being yesterday and I thought I’d missed it!
